The mode is the *x*-value with the greatest probability *p(x)* for a discrete distribution, or the greatest probability density *f(x)* for a continuous distribution. The mode is not uniquely defined for a discrete distribution with two or more values that have the equal highest probability. For example, a distribution of the number of heads in 3 tosses of a coin gives equal probability (3/8) to both 1 and 2 heads. The mode may also not be uniquely defined if a distribution is bimodal (i.e. it has two peaks).
